Harris County Property Tax 101

If you live in Harris County, you have a lot to be excited about! Harris County is rich in history, culture, and natural beauty – not to mention beautiful homes and communities that are great places to live and work. Unfortunately, living in these unique communities comes at a premium. Texas has some of the highest property tax rates in the U.S., and Harris County ranks some of the highest property tax rates in the state. In this blog, we’ll take a look at current Harris County property tax rates, available exemptions you should look into, and resources to help you pay your annual home tax bill.

Harris County Property Tax Rates

It’s important to remember that property taxes are determined based on local government and district needs, so even though the overall average property tax rate in Harris County is 2.31%, many communities in the county have rates that are significantly lower or higher. However, it’s important to keep the property values in mind. Some of the communities with the lowest property tax rates in Harris County still have the highest average tax payments due to the high property values.

Harris County Property Tax Exemptions

As is the case across the state of Texas, Harris County residents are eligible for homestead exemptions on their places of residence. As long as you live on the property, a homestead exemption can reduce the taxable value of your home. In addition to the homestead exemption, there are also available tax breaks for property owners over a certain age, those with disabilities, and active or disabled military service members. Harris County residents may also receive a limited deferral if their property values have increased more than 5% within a year. Make sure you’re taking advantage of all of your available property tax exemptions and deferral options to keep your annual property tax bill manageable. If you believe your property value is too high, you also have the option to appeal to your Appraisal Review Board, which may lead to significant savings.

Paying Your Harris County Property Taxes

Tax bills come out in October each year, and they are typically due on January 31 unless there are special circumstances. Harris County property owners have the options to pay their bills online in one lump sum or establish monthly installment plans. After this date, interest and late payment penalties will begin to accrue. On July 1, unpaid property taxes receive a 15% to 20% fee in addition to the other accrued fees.
