About Bowie County

Founded in 1840, Bowie County is named after James Bowie. Bowie was a frontiersman and knife fighter who died at the Battle of the Alamo. With a population of about 93,000 people, Bowie County is one of Texas’ smallest counties. The largest city, Texarkana, sprang up around the formation of the railroad, becoming an import/export hub for the area. The Unincorporated Township of Boston is the county seat and Texarkana has the largest population. In Bowie County, the average property tax rate is 1.34%, which is lower than the statewide average of 1.8%. However, homeowners in the largest city, Texarkana, pay an average of 2.67%. Those in other populous cities also pay higher premiums, including residents of Hooks who pay 2.86% and those in Nash who pay 2.57%. The low overall average property tax is due in part to the number of unincorporated townships, including the county seat Boston, where the property taxes tend to be much lower.
