About Houston

The most populous city in Texas and the fourth most populous in the US, Houston is the county seat of Harris County with an estimated population of over 2.3 million. Located in the Gulf Coast region of Southeast Texas, Houston was founded in 1836 by land speculators, and it was officially incorporated as a city a year later in 1837. Named for Sam Houston, the former general and president of the Republic of Texas, Houston served as the capital of the Republic of Texas until shortly after the state was reincorporated into the US. Since its founding, Houston’s population has been growing rapidly. In the 20th century, Houston became one of the main trading and business centers in the Gulf Coast region. Today, Houston continues to have a booming economy with a variety of industries, including energy, manufacture, aeronautics, and transportation. Apart from New York City, Houston has the most Fortune 500 companies headquartered within its city limits. With an ever-growing economy, it’s no surprise that buying property in Houston and paying the taxes on these properties can be pricey. Houston has some of the highest property tax rates in the state of Texas, with property owners paying an average 2.21%. With the state average at 1.86% already much higher than the US average of 1.16%, owning property in Houston will come at a premium.
